Thoughts on applicability

As seen on the examples of different drums there are some common features and designs of the layout. The painters of these adopted other designs, which resulted in similarities but with local variations. However, it is justified to think that the general overall design shows common human aspects of projection of a mental map. This is due to the way the human brain works. Since the two hemispheres of the brain have different functions, there is a tendency of separating left and right side of the vision. This is because the left field of vision is transmitted to the right side inside the eyes and from there to the left side of the brain. There are a lot of reports about the different functions of the two hemispheres and new reports still coming. This fact has been used for many years. For example, a kind of customer survey has been developed to understand how an advertisement should be done for new products. People in the survey are asked to simply plot a point in a diagram representing the product. The interesting thing is that this diagram is very simple. It is only divided in four squares. Left/right and upper/lower fields. It has been shown that, despite different culture and country there is a preference to put things that seems important on the upper half, and correspondingly less important on the lower half. The placement left/right seems to correspond to the functions of the left/right side of the brain. This results in a placement to the left if the product appeals to logical and analytical thinking. The right side is chosen if the product appeals to feelings and desires, roughly speaking.

According to this, one can design an individual drum with symbols representing present day activities, persons and important things and concepts. Let us compare to a popular form of fortune telling - Tarot cards. Each card has a special meaning. The cards are shuffled and a few cards are selected and put in a pattern on the table. From the layout one has to find out what they mean in relation to each other. This kind of fortune telling appeals to me more than compared to the kind that does not involve experience, knowledge about psychology, and skills dealing with personal contacts etc. In this case I must say that I don't think that a phone call can be defined as a personal contact. Horoscopes in papers that does not involve each person individually (having a personal contact with the one doing the horoscope), is not serious at all, in my opinion. How fast are the planets moving from day to day anyway? Furthermore, the signs no longer correspond to the dates when people are born (it did correspond 2000 years ago).

Finally, making a divination yourself could probably be the best way to get some serious results. I believe it is a matter of letting your sub-consciousness speak to you. It is not necessary to get into a trance. The human brain is an extreme "machine" that can translate complex patterns of knowledge into recognisable symbols, which in turn can be translated (more or less) into the spoken language.
