SM5IQ as cover picture of disreputable magazineThis can happen to an ARDF man, part I
In 1951,
when I was walking along the streets of Stockholm, I suddenly caught sight of a face, looking at me from the cover of a
somewhat disreputable magazine at a news-stand. It was the same face I could see in any mirror, and it was looking through a loop antenna. It must be my face. How come?! I bought the magazine. Inside, there was a not too well written story about "Radio spies being located". The real spy hunters had, of course, not provided the author with any material, so the text was apparently a product of his phantasy - agents hiding on the 3rd floor, screaming women, policemen with heavy equipment in the dark backyard, the doorbell ringing imperatively (how do you bring about that?), and a still warm transmitter found in a drawer. But the pictures? In the picture archive of the Swedish press, the author had found some photos from ARDF competitions and provided them with texts like "This is how the police located the spy transmitter". The most beautiful photo - that of me, of course - was given to an artist, who also supplied me with two life-guards in the background (thanks!). He very carefully reproduced the piece of string, which kept the loop antenna from falling off the receiver. Evidently he thought that it was a detail of utmost importance. Do I have to say that I was not amused, despite the honour of making the cover page very attractive? |
