On this page you will find information about books about rats for both breeders and pet owners. Also some on genetics for those it may concern...
I do have a lot of books and booklets about small pets, I'll have to sort through them and write about them, so this page will be updated several times for a while...
Pet Owner
- RECOMMENDED - A recommended booklet for the pet rat owner is the Rat Health Care booklet by Debbie "The Rat Lady" Ducommon. This booklet contains most of what you need to know in order to become a good pet rat owner!
- Rats by Susan Fox. Don't buy this book, it just isn't worth your money...
- Rats, A Complete Owner's Manual by Carol A. Himsel. This is abook about pet rats, that contains a bit too many bad bits of information to be of use. But the drawings are very good.
Rat fancier
- NFRS Handbook, NFRS is the English rat club so this booklet ought to be very good, but actually it is not. It recommends very small cages, it insist on culling rat babies, there is desinformation about a common rat disease. Also the genetics is partly wrong, but that can easily be explained since the genetics of the rat wasn't that well known when this booklet was printed. Otherwise it is very well put together.
- RECOMMENDED - The Proper Care Of Fancy Rats by Nick Mays, this is a very good rat book, compared to all other rat books.
Rat breeder
- RECOMMENDED - If you want to study rat genetics you should really try Colour Inheritance In Small Livestock by Roy Robinson. It is a good book with some general genetics info for the beginner, but it is a bit old and thus do not contain information on the latest varieties.
- RECOMMENDED - Genetics of the Norway Rat by Roy Robinson, which can be considered to be accurate on the genetics. This book do not contain information about the latest varieties, though, since it was written some years back.
- RECOMMENDED - Practical Inbreeding by W Watmough, is a superb textbook about the finer points of breeding for excellence, and is really one of the best books you can buy if you really to breed show winners.
