QUESTION: Is it true that rats can get mites from hay?

ANSWER: Only if there has been a mite infested rat near the hay recently! Mites will not live longer than 3 weeks without a rat so if you keep hay safe from contact with rats or mice for three weeks after buying it you will be safe.

To be free of lice you need to keep it safe from contact with rats and mice for 28 days.
