Spirodela polyrhiza - giant duckweed

I just love floating plants! This one is a giant duckweed. In the photo to the left you can see the giant duckweed to the right and a normal duckweed to the left. The giant duckweed is over a centimeter across, maybe 1 1/2, so it is still rather small, and you will need a bunch to make an impression.

I just learned that this plant can be found in the wild in most parts of Sweden. I wonder how it survives the snow in the winter?

Old name: Lemna major.
