Microsorum pteropus - Java fern

Here to the left is a photo of a couple of some small plants I got from my friend, when we were at the aquarium shop. The plants in the photo are just baby plants. She had gotten them from her friend who has a lot of Corydoras catfish. I tied some of them onto a black stone I bought at the aquarium shop with a piece of fishing line.

This plant I've also had before, but I never ever bought them, I always get some from someone who has too many. They are dark green, and grows rather slow. The best thing with them is that you can fasten them to a root or a stone and if you want to move them you just move the root or the stone. They can get some algae growing on them, and then they don't look quite as good. Never plant them in the bottom layer of the aquarium.

In the photo to the right you can see how they look after two months, they have actually grown a bit :-)

The common variety of this plant is well known and has at least 2 different Swedish names: javaormbunke and kolplanta. The English common name is Java fern.

To the right is a picture of another plant that is another variety, called Microsorum pteropus "Windel&aoml;v". I believe there are several other varieties, but I don't have any more.

The Java Fern grows better with some liquid fertilizers, like PMDD, since it has noo roots in the bottom layer it can't reach whatever fertilizer there is in the sand. This is really not a large plant, the largest ones I've ever seen was maybe 25 cm high, and they grow very slow. New baby plants grow directly on the older leaves, so they easily produce more plants.
