Alternanthera cardinalis - scarlet hygro

Alternanthera cardinalis is a new plant to me, I got it recently from a friend, and I don't know anything about it.

It has pretty red leaves, though, that will become more green if the plant do not get enough light. The most green leaves in the photo to the left is from an Amazon sword plant, though.

It is obvious that it is almost as fast as the Hygrophilas in growing and spreading, and they spread the same way - each leave can probably, if you let them, become a new plant. I have not seen that happen yet, though.

When this plant gets too high it just keeps on growing up, out from the water :-)

All photos on this page was taken in my 56 liter low tech aquarium.

I turned over one of the leaves so you can see the bright pink colour of the underside.

This species is supposed to grow up to 50 cm in height, it comes from South America and does not like temperatures under 20 degrees Celsius. Also it wants rather strong light.
