I bought these strange little creatures here in Sweden from a guy that bought them from Germany.
I believe this species comes originally from Mexico, and they grow to be 8 mm long at the most (only the females get that big). They are easy to grow in a small aquarium, I keep most of mine in a 15 liter aquarium. I give mine small slices of carrots, green peas, and flake food for tropical fish. Mine like green peas the most :-) I was told that they like leaves when I bought them.

These animals really do make a mess in their aquarium after a while.
One good thing with these animals is that you can try to have a culture directly in your aquarium, the grown ups are a bit hard for most of the smaller tropical fish, so many common kinds of fish onlyeat the baby Hyalellas.
If the Hyalellas don't get enough food they will eat from you aquarium plants, though...
If you have problems with algae you can put the affected plants in the Hyalella tank and get them totally cleaned!
Do not keep these animals with really small fish - since the really small fish can not eat enough of them and they will soon become too many... I tried to keep them with my heterandria formosa, and that not good, the Hyalellas ate most of the java moss since they became too many...
