Xiphophorus pygmaeus "Rio Axtla" - Dwarf Swordtail

On the 5th of March 2006 I bought one pair of Xiphophorus pygmaeus at the aquarium shop. They were a little expensive and he had very few in the shop.

I never had this species before. The male is yellow and the female is grey, and I read that they will grow up to 4 cm in length for the female and 3,5 cm for the male. Also I read that they produce few babies.

Some English common names for this species are: Dwarf Helleri, Dwarf Swordtail, Pygmy Swordtail and Slender Pygmy Swordtail.

I have been searching the Internet for information about this species, and I found some. I read that you need to feed them small pieces of food, which is easy to understand since they have a very small mouth.

I found some info that said that there are three different varieties of this species. One variety has all grey males and females. The second variety has males with a yellow tail. The third variety had males that are all yellow. I do believe that I have the variety that has all yellow males :-)

My first female died in the summer heat 2006 so I bought more of this pretty little fish. When I had 8 or 10 of them they started breeding, so far I've had maximum 4 fry per litter, but there are several females so there are some fry. The photo to the right shows one of my little fry :-)
