Vietnamese Cardinal - Tanichthys micagemmae

The photo to the right shows one of my Tanichthys micagemmae.

This is a fairly new species, called Vietnamese Cardinal or Dwarf Cardinal. Mine are wild caught fish, so they need a lot of live food. They are supposedly easy to breed, so they were not really expensive at all, but I think they are pretty.

Mine live in a densely planted low tech planted aquarium.

When I bought them I was told that their name, micagemmae, means "beautiful gem".

This species is a close relative to the well known Tanichthys albonubes, the White Cloud Mountain Minnow, which it resembles.

So far the only thing I can tell about my new fish is that they like newly hatched brine shrimp... But mine also eat Grindal worms, flakes, and small freeze foods.

They had one fry last summer (2006) but it perished, and then another in the fall (2006) and that one is almost as big as its parents by now.
