Phalloceros caudimaculatus - Speckled Mosquitofish

I have just bought these fish, and I don't know that much about them yet, except that they are really small, not that much bigger than Heterandria formosa.

When I bought them I was told that they prefer a well planted aquarium.

What I have seen in my aquarium is that they stay close to the surface all the time, except if they are hiding.

I read a scientific report where some scientists had gone to a river where these fish live wild and studied the behaviour of these fish and all other small fish that lived there. They stated that these fish prefer the parts where the water stands still, or almost still. Also they saw that these fish prefered the parts where there were lots of plants, and that the fish usually swimmed above the plants, close to the surface.

The also noticed that these fish seemed to eat algae in large quantities, and in the experiment they killed a bunch of fish and studied what they had eaten. Then they saw that these fish had eaten only algae.

I didn't know that when I bought them, then I might not have bought them, since I really have very little algae in my aquaria.

I have also read somewhere on the Internet that these fish do not like salt in their water, unlike many other livebearing fish.

Unfortunaltely these all died :-( I bought some White Pearl shrimp instead!
