Perugia's Limia - Limia perugiae

The photo to the right shows some of my Limia perugiae along with a few of my Endler's, it doesn't do any justice to the brillians of these beautiful fish!

English common name: Perugia's limia, German common name: Perugiakärpfling. You can't keep this species in the same aquarium as any other Limia without a big risk of producing hybrids.

Limia perugiae is a fish that I bough when I found my favourite fish Xenotoca eiseni, since I easily could get some Limia perugiae too. So I bought some just because I could, and because I had never had this particular species before.

I now have a shool of them, not fully grown, but old enough to produce some little babies of their own, so far I have at least two litters. And I am quite happy that I bought them since they are much prettier than I thought :-) They are just a bit shy, but I keep mine along with Endlers so I really see a lot of them.

I think more people should try this species, I believe they will do good in a community trank with tetras and other peaceful fish. It is a pretty fish, and it does not grow too large for most community tanks, as the common swordtail usually do. An adult swordtail will grow to about 12 - 16 cm in length, while Perugia's Limia only grows to about 7 cm in length. Also this species is hardy and beautiful.
