Denna sida på svenska. On the 13th of March 2003 I bought three zebra mice. They are all males, called Ursut, Charlie & Kojak. Ursut was born on the 21th of May 2002, Charlie & Kojak were born on the 16th of June 2002. They are really pretty and seems to enjoy life a lot. The only problem is that I usually have a hard time telling which is which of them :-)
I have read on the Internet that these animals may actually harm eachother, but my three have been nothing but the best of friends all the time. Mine are more active in the evening, when I see them a lot. They love to chew hay and build on their nest. They also love sitting in a row on a something, tightly together. My three males seems to like eachother a lot.
My own observations
Since I have had these pretty little things for a while now I have noticed a few things myself about them:
- They just love millet.
- They also like green peas, the kind you buy freezed, just put a few peas in hot water a short while, and give the peas (without the water) to them.
- Unlike many other pets they prefer to have their cage in a quiet corner of the room, where they will not be disturbed a lot.
- They love sitting on top of things together, they sit close enough to have body contact for long periods of time.
- They love sitting in their big nest close together.
- They are really thin by nature, so they can be given sunflower seeds and such without getting fat.
- I give my zebra mice lots of cardboard boxes and such things but they almost never go inside them, they just chew on them, making odd sculptures.
- I have actually not seen any of the typical social interactions - like grooming - that is so common in other small pets like mice, rats, gerbils and guinea pigs. Yet they really seem to like close contact with eachother.
- When my zebra mice grew old, over two years, I gave them a safe plastic wheel (that they cannot possibly hurt themselves on), and they run in it for a bit sometimes.
- I have noted that since they turned two years old they act a lot less hyper, they have calmed down extremely much. I wish I tried to tame them from the beginning, but I have never tried to pet them, I have just fed them and given them space and playthings and then I have spent time watching them.
On the 6th of August 2004 one of my zebra mice died. I must admit I was not so good at seeing which were which of them, so I had to ask the breeder just to be certain which it was that died. And it was Kojak. So now I only had Ursut and Charlie left. I sort of plan to buy new zebra mice after these, they are so pretty and they are the most easy to care for of all my animals I've owned so far, and I have really had a lot of different small pets... They are also extremely pretty! The photos on this page doesn't show their true colours :-)
On the 11th of November 2004 I found Ursut dead. He looked like he had fallen to sleep and just never woke up again. Charlie was then alone, and he didn't like it at all so he didn't live many days after that.
