A Texel is a Sheltie with wavy fur.
All Longhaired Breeds are recognized in any colour and any marking, the colour and/or marking DO NOT have to be in the standards. The Texel Breed is produced by combining the rex gene with the Sheltie Breed. This happened sometimes in 1980 - 1985 in England, and was achieved by Mrs Claire White. The first Texels in Sweden was imported in 1988 from England.
In Sweden the Texels are combed out, unlike in the US where the Texels are never combed in order to keep the curls. Instead of not combing our Texels we have another breed that can be combed regularly but still keeps the curls, because the fur is so rough. This breed is a special Swedish breed called Lunkarya and it is not related to the Texel breed. We have done testmating that showed that the texel/merino/alpaca/rex gene are not even situated on the same locus. The Lunkarya is not a longhaired teddy either....
