Eva's Unusual Cavy Varieties Page

Eva's Cavy Page

The following colours and varieties are not (yet) included in our Swedish Cavy Standards.

Shorthaired breeds

Grey varieties
Eva's Grey Cavy Page.

Lemon Argente
Here is a photo of the non-self colour Lemon Argente. This is a genetic variety of the Golden Agouti.
This is actually one of my former pets Milky Way's Orchid Trail "Bulan". She died at the age of 7 years in the summer of 2000.

Sable
No photo of the non-self breed Sable. The sable breed is a colour that is in a way related to the himalayan, in the sence that it is not and shall not be the same colour all over. The head and rump are darker than the rest of the body and the sides are lighter.

Saffron argente
Here is a photo of the non-self breed Saffron argente. This is a female called Bourdoux, pretty isn't she?

Saffron and satin saffron (standard breeds but unusual)
Saffron female Ariel with satin saffron babies. This variety has a standard but it is uncommon here in Sweden.

Satin saffron (standard breed but unusual)
Satin saffron male Glimmer.

Roughhaired breeds

Curly
Curly is a rough coated breed that is not in standards. It looks like rex and teddy. Genetically it is a short haired Lunkarya. This is actually one of my former pets Milky Way's Fnistan.

Rex Crested
This is just a crested rex, the photo shows my former pet Fairy Tales Silvia.

Longhaired breeds

Lunkarya
Lunkarya is genetically different from texels, alpacas and merinos. So far we have seen at least four different long haired lunkarya varieties: sheltie lunkarya, coronet lunkarya, peruvian lunkarya and satin sheltie lunkarya. It is the peruvian lunkarya we are trying to get into the Swedish cavy standards, under the name Lunkarya.

This is actually one of my former pets Aristoteles C.

Satin Coronet

Satin Coronet is just a satin sheltie with a crest.

Breeds with no hair

Bald
No photos. The bald cavies are also called skinny.

Other breeds

Ridgeback

A Ridgeback has a ridge along the back, from the neck to the tail should be, if cavies had a tail, that is...
A Ridgeback is often produced from crosses between a shorthair and a peruvian.

I have a pet cavy called Stjärna, who is a poorly Ridgeback. Stjärna has only a short ridge.
