The Grey gene

The grey gene pg, a mutation at the p locus, gives lots and lots of new cavy colours... The darkest self variety - Self Grey - have also been called Self Blue. At first the colour appeared in the US. It was exported to England, and from there to Sweden. The animals we got from England was rather pale in colour, but after a lot of selective breeding for improvement of colour the colour now looks as the photos on this page shows. Here in Sweden also several other colours was produced, other than Self Grey, by crossing the grey gene with other stock. Especially a whole series of different agouti varieties with pretty colours was produced.

The Grey varieties have dark ruby eyes. Or rather the colour of the pupil should be dark ruby. It may vary from light ruby to dark ruby. Around the pupil is a thin strip of blue, that is the iris. The main part of what you see is the pupil.

Today the self Grey is a standard breed here in Sweden.
I am devoting this page to put up photos of a few different varieties of the colour Grey.
