Nemo

Nemo is a big Golden/White/Golden Agouti castrated male. The photo of Nemo to the left was taken on the 14th of January 2006.

In the beginning of August 2005 Stjärna started behave badly. She acted as a male, and purred at the other 3 females. She cornered them and climbed up on top of them with all her weight.

Well, I've had such a female before, Fnistan did that a lot, but no-one was ever hurt by Fnistan.

The problem was twofold: one, she is very heavy, and two, she was very determined. It all ended up with Danira getting hurt. Danira's hind legs have been paralysed more than once because of this. So I decided to get a neutered male, in hope Stjärna would stop her behaviour in the presence of a male. Thus I got Nemo. And it worked wonders!

Nemo arrived on the 13th of August 2005. The only problem then was that Nemo was just aloan, and would Stjärna return to that bad behaviour when Nemo's owner wants him back? Or is it possible that I can keep him, for Danira's sake?

In the end it turned out that I could keep Nemo, and I'm very happy about that. Not only did it solve every problem with my cavies, but also he is a wonderful cavy. He is extremely tame, he walks around the floor a lot, under the sofa, under the table by my bed, under my computer, and so on.

He's really not that pretty, with his small eyes and big body, and he also have rather a long nose, but everything about his personality makes up for that and more. And even if he is not as pretty as a show cavy, he is very cute :-)

I'm not the only one thinking this, everyone that comes here seems to like him better than my other cavies :-)

Here is Nemo snugly stretched out beside his big friend, a powerful German Shepherd Dog, that happens to love small pets.

I still have not gotten any paperwork on Nemo so I don't know how old he is or anything, but I've been told that he was probably between 1 and 2 years old when I got him. If I say that he might have been 1 1/2 when I got him, he would have been born somewhere around February of 2004. I know he was rehomed, since he was left at a "piggy pound" called "Marsvinshjälpen" here in Stockholm (that now seems to be closed down). What I cannot understand is how anyone could want to get rid of such a tame and lovely cavy...

He spends a lot of time on top of the piggy houses, together with Ninni, and he walks the floor a lot, taking Ninni and Tanja with him, they even wanders out in the hall, and into the kitchen.

One of Nemo's latest tricks that he taught himself is to come and beg for treats when he is out on the floor. I let him take a bite from a banana that I was eating once when I was working on my computer and he was under the table it sits on, and that was enough to make him come and try to get treats all the time :-)

Another thing, that I only saw him do once, is that when Tanja was standing in his way and he couldn't get past her - he actually jumped over her! That was very strange... I know he can jump that high, he's done it several times that I've seen, but jumping over another cavy? I believe Nemo is extraordinary!

Bad News

Sadly Nemo has cancer, he has lots of uneven lumps spread out on his body, it started on the part his underside that is between his hind legs, and today he has several uneven lumps in that area. Actually I have been able to feel the first two uneven lumps all the time since I got him, and I have just been hoping that it would not spread. It is not the kind of tumours that can be surgically removed, and I knew that from the start.

Now he is having problems, not feeling good, eating less and so on, just like anybody with advanced cancer, so I will have to have him put to sleep soon.

Nemo died on the 19th of Octber 2006.
