QUESTION 1: I have two piggies of the same sex. They mount eachother! Whats wrong?
ANSWER: As long as you are sure that they are the same sex there is nothing wrong. Piggies mount eachother in single sex groups. If you have males together - be happy as long as they mount eachother, as long as they do that they will not start to fight!
QUESTION 2: We have got a male guinea pig, is it a good idea to buy a female companion for him? We have been told that male guinea pigs always must fight.
ANSWER: A mating pair will produce a lot of guinea pig babies, so it is not a good idea. In Sweden we have good experiences with keeping two or more male guinea pigs together, but two males together require a bigger cage than two females...
You could neuter your male, several weeks before you put him in with a female. He may keep him male behaviour, but males and females do not fight so they might be very happy together!
QUESTION 3: My piggies are eating hair! What's wrong?
ANSWER: Are you sure you are giving enough hay? Piggies needs lots and lots of hay! Some piggies I am told eat hair anyway - but the only piggies I have met that ate lots of hair was malnourished rescue piggies.
QUESTION 4: I've been told that guinea pigs are nocturnal - is this true?
ANSWER: No, they are supposed to be diurnal, which means that they most active in the morning and in the evening. Actually they are active for a short period of time, then takes a nap (often with eyes open) are active again and so on all day and night. This means that they never sleep for long, and they never are active for long either.
QUESTION 5: My piggie chirps like a bird - what's wrong?
ANSWER: I have had both males and females chirping like birds through the years. Here in Sweden we call it the fire alarm! But nobody know (yet) what it really means. The big guinea pig mystery!
