(1) their independence of the breath movement; (2) the suction or smack approach; (3) the phenomena of rarefaction of air; and (4) the rarefaction of seal release" (Breckwoldt 1972:282). However, Chladni does not transcribe any clicks, i.e. he employs no graphic symbolism; he only talks about them.

Notes: "Gordon's definite statement of the Bushman debate. Supremely scholarly, if idiosyncratic ... he gives the best portrayal of anyone of the Bushmen as seen through the eyes of colonists and indigenous oppressors of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He also brings the transformations of this portrayal up to the present ... Gordon's central argument is that, in order to understand the images, we need to know the social contexts which gave rise to them" (Barnard 1992:67f).

Notes: (The following comments are based on a review which I have lost the reference to.) Stopa tries to "retrace the prehistory of Indo-European as well as that of African by assuming Hottentot-Bushman as a common base" (p. 209). Moreover, Stopa categorizes all the world's languages into an evolutionary scale of some kind, and claims that the ones at the bottom have less arbitrary relationships between the sign and the signified than the ones "higher" up. Says Stopa: "[there is a] retraceable bridge between the communication systems of animals, especially those of the human-like apes, and the most primitive communication system of man" (p. 10). Thus he also tries to show that there are Bushman reflexes in chimpanzee's communication (!).
