MH - vad
är det?
MH står för
Mentaltest Hund.

Swedish Temperment test
This test is mostly done by the working breeds in Sweden, but since the "dangerous dogs discussion" the Swedish Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club and the Swedish Kennel Club thought this could be a very good thing to do for this breed!
Temperament tests of SBTs in Sweden.
A number of SBT breeders in Sweden carry out temperament tests on their dogs. Breeders usually test their dogs and their progeny from 12 months to 18months of age. The test is regarded as a tool by both owners and breeders and is used to insure that the dog has a sound temperament. The test normally takes 35 minutes to perform and each dog is assessed by an accredited instructor. The instructor also has several assistants who help in the test. There is no pass or fail (except from the shot) what you receive is a detailed description of how your dog reacts during the 10 step test.
Step 1 Contact
The dog and owner walk together past a group of people. The instructor greets and tries to establish contact with the dog. The instructor then takes the dog for a short walk away from the owner and tries to build on this initial contact. He then returns to the owner and inspects the dogs mouth, chest & legs etc
The dog should not be too reserved or afraid but willing to co operate with a stranger.
Step
2 Play
(Karre is playing)
The instructor attempts to engage the dog in some playful activities. The dog and instructor play with a rag. The dog is allowed to pull and chase the rag.
The dog should be willing to co operate with the instructor.
Step
3 Hunt
(Ozzy is hunting the rag)
The dog is given the opportunity to chase after a rag. The instructor assessed how quickly the dog is willing to take up the chase and what it does when it captures the rag.
Step
4 Activity
(Lucky)
This part assesses how active the dog is. The dog stands beside its owner for 3 minutes without doing anything. Some dogs bark others lie down etc.
The dog should be both calm and relaxed.
Step
5 Play at a Distance
(Sören wants to play)
The dog is given the opportunity to engage in play with someone at a distance. The person (wearing a large raincoat) stands 40 meters from the dog and tries to encourage the dog to come and play with a rag or something before disappearing behind some bushes. The dog is allowed off its lead and is encouraged to find the mysterious person. When the dog finds the person he is encouraged to play with the stranger.
The dog’s curiosity, courage and willingness to leave its owner are assessed.
Step
6 Surprise
(Sören gets scared)
The dog is surprised by a large mannequin that suddenly pops up in front of the dog. Some dogs are afraid others aggressive. The key is that the dog both reacts and works off his annoyance. This cooling down happens when the dog and handler approach the mannequin together, a few times if necessary.
The dog should be curious and after the initial shock quite bold and relatively unafraid and relaxed.
The dog should neither be too afraid nor worry too much.
Step
7 Sensitivity to sound
(Karre doesn´t get scared)
The dog hears a very loud sound. It is usually a large piece of corrugated iron which someone pulls a metal chain on. Some dogs react strongly to the noise others ignore it. The instructor assesses how long it takes the dog to react and what its reaction is.
The dog should not be over sensitive to loud noises.
Step
8 Ghost

(Karre is trying to scare the ghosts away and Lucky says hello to them.)
Here the dog’s reaction to a potential threat is measured. Two people dressed as ghosts approach the dog slowly. Their eyes & mouths of the costumes are covered and painted black. It is important that the wind is not behind the "ghosts". The "ghosts" stop 4 meters from the dog and turn around, ( so the threat is minimized) and then the dog is given the opportunity to approach and greet them.
The dog’s keenness to protect its owner and boldness are assessed.
Step 9 Play
The dog is again assessed according to step 2.
The instructor assesses if the previous 8 steps have affected the dog in any way.
Step 10 Shot
Someone fires a blank shot 20 meters from the dog. This assesses how well the dog reacts to sounds.
When the 10 steps are completed the handler receives a Temperament Test certificate.
Another is sent to the breeder and one is sent to the Swedish Kennel Club.
