Jakobstad became a leading shipbuilding town for 200 years ago. This position held for almost 100 years. Jacobstads Wapen is an result after years of voluntary work and tradition. |
The building of the 18th century galeass Jacobstads Wapen is a symbolic event for the whole of Jakobstad, it's history and population. Photos shown to the left are taken when Jacobstads Wapen visited Stockholm. The galeass serves as a cruising vessel in the summer for tourists and can even be booked for charter (weddings, conferences). The galeass Jacobstads Wapen is build after the plans by Fredrik Henrik af Chapman from the year 1755. Those plans ere one of the oldest plans in Finland and the ground for almost 30 vessels. |
The Jacobstads Wapen that can be found today in Jakobstad Old Harbor, was build between years 1988 and 1994. She has a modern security system and she can carry 50 passengers. After finishing this project, they found a new challenge, "Vega" will be renovated. Vega is one of the ships that Finland build for the Soviet Union after the 2nd world war as payment for damages... In 1997 she was towed from Tallin to Jakobstad. She is in quite bad shape. The Vega-project will renovate the ship to her original state. They will take advantage of the experience from those who worked with Jacobstads Wapen. Those who are interested about Vega, may visit the site of renovating and take a look inside the vessel. |
