Buildings


City hall. The first City hall was burned by the Russians in march 1714. It was rebuild in after the year 1731. Carl Rijf build the third version, but it was burned down in Jakobstads great fire in the year 1835. This City hall that stands today was build in the year 1875 and got this appearance finally in the year 1890.


Strengberg. In the year 1762, the tobacco industry Strengberg & Co started it's business in Jakobstad. Their industrial building was ready in the year 1897. Today the City Hall is located there. Some museums may also be found there. The tobacco industry will be only a part of Jakobstads history after the year 1998.


Firestation. Torben Grut planned this building. Jakobstads fire department was ready to use in the year 1912. Torben Grut planned also the Stockholm stadium, so you may see some similarities between these buildings.


City church. The first church was build in the year 1691 but it was burned down by the Russian in November 1714. The new church was build by Johan Knubb on the same ground in the year 1731. Some of the prominent citizens was buried under the church floor.


Pedersöre church. Probably build in the 15th century, the Pedersöre church is one of the oldest medieval churches in Ostrobotnia. Above the main entrance we see the inscription 1250. That date is unverifiable. This church has seen lots over the years. In July 1985 the church was completely destroyed by a fire, the 65 meter high steeple included. Restoration of the church started immediately and the church was reopened again during the Advent in 1986.


Skata. Skata is an protected wooden house area and is mostly preserved in its original state. It was spared from the great fire 150 years ago. Skata was planned already in the year 1783.
