The Families Julin, Pettersson and Söderberg

My name is Henning Oskar Fredrik Juhlin , but many relatives are called Pettersson or Petersson. I begun early wondering over where my family name comes from. I knew that my father Gustaf Henning Juhlin was born in Kristinehamn, Varnum parish. Värmlands län on April 23, 1881. I looked into the Dopbok (Book of the birth) of the Parish for 1881 and found there Gustaf on the 23rd of April. His parents were Adolf Fredrik Julin and his wife Maria Pettersson. Adolf Fredrik was born in Nysund parish, Örebro län, in 1854 and son to Corporal Gustaf Andersson Hjul, in Skagershult parish, Örebro län. Maria Pettersson was daughter of the Blacksmith Johan Pettersson, Kristinehamn.

Gustaf Hjul lived on Soldattorpet N:r 94 in N. Julön's Rote under Edsberg's Company, Nerikes Regemente. In the General Munster Roll for 1852, the soldier is called vice Corporal Gustaf Hjul, "before called Gustaf Andersson", and the rote Hjulön. But in the Church Books for 1841 – 1850 the rote is spelled N. Julön and the soldier called Gustaf Jul. In the Books for 1856 – 1860 the place is N. Julöns Soldattorp and the soldier Corporal Gustaf Julin . In 1863 he has been promoted to "Distinktioskorpral" and moves from the Rote to a place called Nyttorp in Skagershult parish, Örebro län. In the Munster Roll for 1863 there is a note stating: "Requests and is granted dismissal in consequense of injury brought down upon him by the State Railways. Maintenance is granted. Served excellently well."

Gustaf Julin was born on July 30, 1821, in S:t Nicolai Parish, Nyköping, Södermanlands län, as son to the Brick-maker Anders Ersson, born in 1780 at Brunneby, Östergötlands län, and his wife Anna Catharina (Caisa) Anders Dotter. The Family moved 1823 to Skagershult where Anders Ersson in 1821 had been engaged by the Administrator of Hasselfors Bruk building a Brick factory at Fagersand on the land of the owners. The Family Ersson took finally the name Söderberg.

I have not been able to find Gustaf Julin in the Church books for Skagershult, for the books were destroyed by fire when thee church burnt down in 1870. Nor is he to be found in the new books with beginning from 1871. However, I have found some information in a book called "Skagershult. Reconstruction of the Church Books of Skagershult 1635 - 1870", by Ulf Berggren. There he is noted on p. 223 in table 73:7 Nyttorp 1863 – 1865. Gustaf Julin, born 1821 30/7 St Vithälla, Nyköping S:t Nicolai sn, son of Anders Eriksson Söderberg, (see table 24:16). Moved in from Nysund's parish. Lived before in Ramundabodas parish. Watch over the Church. Married with Anna Maria Högberg, born 1816 7/10 in Fellersta, Gällersta sn, daughter to Anders Högberg, see table 26:15.

Gustaf Julins son Adolf Fredrik, moved about 1871 to Varnum parish, Kristinehamn, Värmlands län. In 1880 he married Maria, daughter of a Blacksmith, Johan Pettersson from Krontorp in Nysund parish. Johan had earlier moved to Kristinehamn and founded a smitty and he bought a house, Allén (Prästgatan 35), and the couple moved finally in there. (See Varnum Hfl 1871 – 1875). Adolf Fredrik Julin worked at Kristinehamns Mek. Werkstad from 1874 to 1891, when he got a work as locomotive foreman at Statens Jernvägar.
In 1899 he was employed by Nora Karlskoga Jernväg in Nora as Workshop Supervisor. There he stayed until 1920 when he returned to Kristinehamn.

On my mother's side I derive from Indelte Lifgrenadiären Per Håkansson Pang . born 1818 in Heda parish, Östergötlands län.. He belonged to Ombergs Company of Andra Lifgrenadier Regementet and lived on Bankaby Rote in Ödeshög.

His son, Frans Oskar Petersson , born 1845, moved in 1871 to Stockholm and got employment in a grocery shop on Kungl. Djurgården, "with a salary of 250 Rdr". He was thrifty and took finally over the shop. He married Emelie Amanda Lindström, born 1846 in Stockholm, and lived under the 1890s at Stora Westanberg, a farm in Österåker in Roslagen.
