300 TE-24 Technical Specifications |
The Mercedes-Benz 124 series was manufactured from 1985 to 1995.
Later on it was however still manufactured my MB India for the domestic market.
Together with the W140 series (which I can not fit in my garage) the 124-series
(the estate version which this is being the S124), this was in my mind the last
generation of real old-school Mercedes. Beautifully over-engineered with
straight six power and single arm hubpanorama windscreen wiper.
In 1992 this was the top-of-the-line Mercedes estate car,
the Porsche-built 500E with V8 only being sold as a saloon car. The BMW M5
touring was at the time the only estate car which was more powerfull with its
3,8 litre engine.
My car is a pre-face lift, blue metallic with blue leather and
walnut trim.
In original unmodified condition.
Sold new in Sweden, this already high-spec 300TE-24 (for example, self-leveling rear suspension was standard) was ordered with a number of further factory options.
Above and beyond this, dealer fitted options included Blaupunkt RDS Cassette player with CD changer, alarm system, protective mat for load area, detachable towbar and petrol powered engine preheater with radio controlled remote.
The car has the 4-speed autobox (a 5-speed option was available) which does make the car rather high-revving at motorway (autobahn) speeds. It does however accelerate fantastically well all the way to the 7000 rpm rev limit in fourth at which point it is cruising at around 225 km/h. 0 - 100 km/h is achieved in 8,3 seconds. Official fuel consumption for "mixed driving" was approx 12 litres per 100 kilometers but I average closer to 17.
Work that has needed to be done:
CD changer had to be dismantled to get my CDs out after it failed.
Distributor cap and rotor needed changing.
Water pump needed changing (leaked).
Battery needed replacing (100Ah)
A gasket at the front of the engine needed replacing.
