Here is a list of car (car related) museums in the Stockholm area, they can be visited from Stockholm without the need of staying away overnight.
Worth noting is that three of these museums and Malmköpings Musiespårväg (historic tram line) are all within a few kilometers of each other. The 4 of them together make a nice day out.
Bussmuséet (Bus museum) in Malmköping, south of Stockholm, next to Malmköpings Musespårväg.
Some semi-old buses from 50s, 60s and 70s.
Condition varies but you are allowed on board a
number of them.

busses, lorries etc.

Skokloster motormuseum (Skokloster Motor Museum), at Skokloster Slott (Skokloster Castle), in Skokloster, north of Stockholm.
A good collection of cars, but quite crampt for
space.

A very nice collection of cars from around the
world. Some from the 30s, some even older and some newer.
There is also a juke box museum at the castle, but this is only shown through
guided tours at certain times.
